Algorithms of Oppression: How Search Engines Re...

A revealing look at how negative biases against women of color are embedded in search engine results and algorithms.  Run a Google search for “black girls” - what will you find? “Big Booty” and other sexually explicit terms are likely to come up as top search terms. But, if you type in “white girls”, the results are radically different. The suggested porn sites and un-moderated discussions about “why black women are so sassy” or “why black women are so angry” presents a disturbing portrait of black womanhood in modern society.  In Algorithms of Oppression, Safiya Umoja Noble challenges the idea that search engines like Google offer an equal playing field for all forms of ideas, identities, and activities. Data discrimination is a real social problem; Noble argues that the combination of private interests in promoting certain sites, along with the monopoly status of a relatively small number of Internet search engines, leads to a biased set of search algorithms that privilege whiteness and discriminate against people of color, specifically women of color.  Through an analysis of textual and media searches as well as extensive research on paid online advertising, Noble exposes a culture of racism and sexism in the way discoverability is created online. As search engines and their related companies grow in importance - operating as a source for email, a major vehicle for primary and secondary school learning, and beyond - understanding and reversing these disquieting trends and discriminatory practices is of utmost importance.  An original, surprising and, at times, disturbing account of bias on the internet, Algorithms of Oppression contributes to our understanding of how racism is created, maintained, and disseminated in the 21st century.  PLEASE NOTE: When you purchase this title, the accompanying reference material will be available in your Library section along with the audio. 1. Eating pussy, muff diving, and giving head are making headlines in Toronto recently. It's not about the sex shops; it's happening at city hall. Today, Susie talks about Mayor Rob Ford's sexual adventures up in Canada. Oh, it's not been pretty - he's in a bunch of trouble with his constituents as well as the press. Next, Susie looks at Google's decision to display warnings on some popular search terms - and there are 13,000 that qualify! These words are associated with child pornography, so Google says it's all about stopping child abuse. But some of the "dangerous" words are "daddy" and "Lolita". Susie says this is a lame attempt to help parents feel that their kids are now safer online. Then, in our "What's New on Audible" segment, Susie introduces another sexy audiobook: Best Black Women's Erotica by Blanche Richardson. This was the very first anthology of black women's erotica, and it includes 25 stories by many great writers. Susie has an audio sample for you to enjoy. Have a question? You can call Susie's hotline at 831-480-5110. Recently, Susie and other prominent sexperts got together online and blew off some steam. What were they discussing? Well it seems that many people who work in the sex industry are tired of being labeled as always "ready to put out". Susie reads from the blog Feministe and the article called "Taking the Erotic Out of Sexual Culture", which opened up a raucous debate about how people assume that, if you work in the sex industry, you're always horny. People forget that any kind of work is work - sometimes it's fun, sometimes it's tedious, and sometimes you can't wait for the end of the day. Next, Susie wants you to join her in playing a game on Google that will reveal many hidden passions. Susie searched on the phrase "Susie likes to" and tells us the revealing 10 top results. The number-one result was...Susie likes to swing! Then, in the "Try This at Home" mailbag, we have a phone-call question from a listener who needs advice on what a mother should think when her daughter is offered a photo-shoot spread with Playboy? Is she destined to become a slut? Have a question? You can call Susie's hotline at 831-480-5110. THE RISE OF THE HUMAN-CENTRIC ENTERPRISEArtificial intelligence, robotics, big data, disruptive developments based on digital businessmodels bring companies to the edge of singularity, understood as the point of departurewhere a system changes into something entirely new.Following big questions in business and society derived from singularity:• How do we lead more humanly in business when Artificial Intelligence decides faster and more precisely than we do?• How do we create a framework for new forms of cooperation?• How can companies develop an ambidextrous culture to stabilize that worth preserving and at the same time initiates innovation?• In short, what do we have to do today to survive the digital revolution? The Singularity Leadership® model provides practical answers – because the human being can beat algorithmsREADER´S VOICES:"Jan Brecke is a well-respected authority of corporate cultures (from 'testosterone top-down' to 'silicon valley bottom-up') and a smart observant predestined to provide direction in digital transformation. Anyone looking for fresh, thoughtful, and purposeful solutions to shape modern leadership in today's digital world should read this book. "Dr. Kerim Galal, Senior Vice President (SVP) Corporate Strategy, Innovation & Digitalization, DEKRA SE “A great guide to leading the transformation of a business organization into the digital age. 'Singularity Leadership' comprehensively and understandably covers all relevant aspects of this process while keeping a focus on being a human being. Perhaps the best and most readable book I have read on leadership and corporate culture right now and that I can definitely recommend.”Klaus-Peter Fett, Chief Information and Digital Officer and Member of the Managing Board, Roechling SE & Co. KG (at the printing of this book: Industry Lead Manufacturing Google Cloud, Google LLC)"At first you might think: Another book in the flood of leadership literature that tells me how to do it and how to make it even better. But far from it: I have read a valuable book, which describes clearly and legibly the challenges for successful corporate management in the course of digitization. The book is written pragmatically and understandable. Remarkably is the explicit recommendation to depart from technocratic and obsolete old school management of the ' Deutschland AG' type.Jan Brecke is not satisfied with the description of the challenges but provides an excellent guide to the reader, a cookbook with the essential ingredients and recipes for successful corporate management, which will continue to be successful in the future."Prof. Dr. Christian Knop, Medical Director Traumatology and Orthopedics, Klinikum Stuttgart"Jan Brecke knows the challenges companies have to face and names pragmatic solutions. As companies do not change their operating models completely in all units at the same pace, a mix of more traditional approaches and start-up processes like ambidexterity is suggested by the author. I would definitely recommend this book to all my managers."Rolf Zeidler, Global Head of Analytics and Insight Services, multinational software corporation"Jan Brecke´s book "Singularity Leadership" is based on the thesis that the digital transformation is not a technical problem but a cultural one. Thus, every organization and leader has the opportunity to face these new realities, like digital change, Generation Z, and increasingly more complex and volatile decision-making environments. The book offers ten principles of action that provide pragmatic assistance in developing a sustainable corporate culture. In doing so, Jan Brecke anchors the idea that a successful company should be built on authentic company values in the future and to guide the meaningful and goal-oriented actions of its employees. An exciting book that keeps inspiring people to think about their challenges and management tools and that gives them a lot of concrete suggestions for trying out new things to survive the digital transformation! This volume contains some lecture notes of the 12th Reasoning Web Summer School (RW 2016), held in Aberdeen, UK, in September 2016.In 2016, the theme of the school was "Logical Foundation of Knowledge Graph Construction and Query Answering". The notion of knowledge graph has become popular since Google started to use it to improve its search engine in 2012. Inspired by the success of Google, knowledge graphs are gaining momentum in the World Wide Web arena. Recent years have witnessed increasing industrial take-ups by other Internet giants, including Facebook's Open Graph and Microsoft's Satori. The aim of the lecture note is to provide a logical foundation for constructing and querying knowledge graphs. Our journey starts from the introduction of Knowledge Graph as well as its history, and the construction of knowledge graphs by considering both explicit and implicit author intentions. The book will then cover various topics, including how to revise and reuse ontologies (schema of knowledge graphs) in a safe way, how to combine navigational queries with basic pattern matching queries for knowledge graph, how to setup a environment to do experiments on knowledge graphs, how to deal with inconsistencies and fuzziness in ontologies and knowledge graphs, and how to combine machine learning and machine reasoning for knowledge graphs.

This work focuses on the characterization of adult lifelong learners’ Personal Learning Environments (PLEs) by implicit and explicit tools of personalization. It aims aims toward creating a system for the development of a learning path for the characterisation of PLE for adult life learners.  The synergy of formal and informal learning in the dynamic construction of a lifelong learner’s PLE is fully explored, with the recognition that the majority of learning, especially for life long learners, occurs outside traditional learning formats. Specifically, this volume discusses the design, implementation, and validation of the SSW4LL (Social Semantic Web for Lifelong Learners) format, and the the SSW4LL system, built on Moodle 2.0 integrated with an adaptive mechanism (conditional activities) and some tools of Social Semantic Web (Semantic MediaWiki, Diigo and Google+). With thoroughly grounded cases studies, this volume makes the case that these systems are suitable to provide a dynamically personalized learning environment to the lifelong learner. All of these environments are fully discussed and cases made for each as a tool for constructing adult learners' PLEs.

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra is a fundamental area of mathematics, and is arguably the most powerful mathematical tool ever developed. It is a core topic of study within fields as diverse as: business, economics, engineering, physics, computer science, ecology, sociology, demography and genetics. For an example of linear algebra at work, one needs to look no further than the Google search engine, which relies upon linear algebra to rank the results of a search with respect to relevance. The strength of the text is in the large number of examples and the step-by-step explanation of each topic as it is introduced. It is compiled in a way that allows distance learning, with explicit solutions to set problems freely available online. The miscellaneous exercises at the end of each chapter comprise questions from past exam papers from various universities, helping to reinforce the reader's confidence. Also included, generally at the beginning of sections, are short historical biographies of the leading players in the field of linear algebra to provide context for the topics covered. The dynamic and engaging style of the book includes frequent question and answer sections to test the reader's understanding of the methods introduced, rather than requiring rote learning. When first encountered, the subject can appear abstract and students will sometimes struggle to see its relevance; to counter this, the book also contains interviews with key people who use linear algebra in practice, in both professional and academic life. It will appeal to undergraduate students in mathematics, the physical sciences and engineering.
